What Is an Index Fund?

How an Index Fund Works

"Indexing" is a form of passive fund management. Instead of a fund portfolio manager actively stock picking and market timing—that is, choosing securities to invest in and strategizing when to buy and sell them—the fund manager builds a portfolio whose holdings mirror the securities of a particular index. Russell 2000, made up of small-cap company stocks

Bloomberg Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index, which follows the total bond market

Nasdaq Composite, made up of 3,000 stocks listed on the Nasdaq exchange

Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), consisting of 30 large-cap companies

An index fund tracking the DJIA, for example, would invest in the same 30, large and publicly-owned companies that comprise that index.

Portfolios of index funds substantially only change when their benchmark indexes change. If the fund is following a weighted index, its managers may periodically re-balance the percentage of different securities to reflect the weight of their presence in the benchmark. Weighting is a method used to balance out the influence of any single holding in an index or a portfolio.

Index Funds vs. Actively Managed Funds

Investing in an index fund is a form of passive investing. The opposite strategy is active investing, as realized in actively managed mutual funds—the ones with the securities-picking, market-timing portfolio manager described above.

Lower Costs

One primary advantage that index funds have over their actively managed counterparts is the lower management expense ratio. A fund's expense ratio—also known as the management expense ratio—includes all of the operating expenses such as the payment to advisors and managers, transaction fees, taxes, and accounting fees.

Since the index fund managers are simply replicating the performance of a benchmark index, they do not need the services of research analysts and others that assist in the stock-selection process. Managers of index funds trade holdings less often, incurring fewer transaction fees and commissions. In contrast, actively managed funds have larger staffs and conduct more transactions, driving up the cost of doing business.

The extra costs of fund management are reflected in the fund's expense ratio and get passed on to investors. As a result, cheap index funds often cost less than a percent—0.2%-0.5% is typical, with some firms offering even lower expense ratios of 0.05% or less—compared to the much higher fees actively managed funds command, typically 1% to 2.5%.

Expense ratios directly impact the overall performance of a fund. Actively managed funds, with their often-higher expense ratios, are automatically at a disadvantage to index funds, and struggle to keep up with their benchmarks in terms of overall return.

Central government Big announcement for poor people : 5 kg free ration in May and June amid COVID-19 second wave.

The Centre will spend more than Rs 26,000 crore on this initiative that has been taken in view of the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country.

In a big relief to the poorer sections of the society amid the devastating second wave of coronavirus pandemic, the Central government on Friday announced that it will provide free food grains under the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana for the months of May and June, 2021.

In a statement released by the Government of India, 5 kilogram free food grains will be provided to around 80 crore beneficiaries in the country.
The Centre will spend more than Rs 26,000 crore on this initiative that has been taken in view of the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country.
The announcement has come as India continues to shatter all ‘records’ on the coronavirus front. The country recorded more than 3.32 lakh new coronavirus cases in a single day on Friday.

With 3,32,730 new coronavirus cases recorded over the past 24 hours, as per the data updated at 8 am this morning, India’s caseload has risen to 1,62,63,695 with 24,28,616 active cases.With 3,32,730 new coronavirus cases recorded over the past 24 hours, as per the data updated at 8 am this morning, India’s caseload has risen to 1,62,63,695 with 24,28,616 active cases.

Recoveries have surged to 1,36,48,159, with the case fatality rate being at 1.15 per cent. As per PTI, India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5, 50 lakh on September 16, 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20, one crore on December 19, and 1.50 crore on April 19, 2021.

The central government will be providing free foodgrain to nearly 80 crore people for the next two months (May and June), Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday. This will be facilitated through the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana.

According to the plan, the Centre will be providing 5 kg free foodgrain to the beneficiaries. The central government said it will be spending more than Rs 26,000 crore on this.

PM Narendra Modi stressed that it is important for the poor get nutritional support at a time when the country is facing the second wave of Covid-19.
Last year in March, the government announced the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana under which it provided free foodgrain to the poor for about three months (April-June).

Back then the government said the special scheme would benefit nearly 81 crore beneficiaries and they would be provided with an additional quota of free-of-cost foodgrains (Rice/Wheat) at a scale of 5 Kg per person per month, over and above their regular monthly entitlements

Government of Gujarat No .: V-1 / KA / 102050/2 Home Department, Secretariat, Gandhinagar Dat.  16.03.20 31 ૨, Order: Novel Corona virus (COVID - 19) has been declared a global epidemic by WHO.  In this regard, instructions and guidelines have been issued from time to time by the Central Government and the State Government.  

The impact of COVID-19 is spreading in some cities in the state.  The state government has seriously considered this.  At the end of the adult deliberation, the state government has decided to implement the following.  Ta.  With effect from 18.03.2021, no more than 50 (fifty) persons can gather in a closed or open space for a wedding ceremony.  Wedding ceremonies may not be held during the night period in cities where the night is performed.  e.  In case of death, no more than 50 (fifty) persons may be present at the funeral.  Public political / social / religious events, receptions, birthday celebrations or other gatherings will be completely banned with immediate effect.  

The festivals of every religion during April and May will not be celebrated in public and people will not be able to gather in public.  All the festivals should be celebrated with the family at home according to their faith.  

The attendance of employees in government, semi-government, board, corporation and all types of private offices should be kept up to 50% or arrangements should be made for alternate day employees to come on duty.  This provision does not apply to essential services.  All religious places in the state  An appeal is made to keep it closed to the public till 30.03.2021.  It is advisable that daily worship / rituals at religious places be performed by the administrators / priests of religious places with limited number of people.  Devotees are also urged not to go to shrines for direct darshan.

Registration for next phase of COVID19 Vaccination on Co-WIN2.0 portal will open at 9:00 am on 1st March 2021 at www.cowin.gov.in

More than 10,000 private hospitals empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PMJAY, more than 600 hospitals under CGHS and other private hospitals empanelled under State Schemes can function as COVID Vaccination Centres.(at www.cowin.gov.in)vaccinated.The next phase of the world’s largest vaccination drive for the age appropriate population groupswill commence from 1stMarch 2021You can cause coronavirus infections to your personal individuals. If you stay safe, you will inevitably be able to protect your personal life as well. If any of your personal people fall into the high-risk category, you may also need to be vaccinated.

Registration will open at 9:00 am on 1st Marc2021 (at www.cowin.gov.in)

Cizens will be able to register and book and appointment for vaccination, anytime and anywhere, using the COWIN 2.0 portal or through other IT applications such as Arogya Setu etc.
This information was shared during the orientation workshop organised by the Union Health Ministry and the National Health Authority (NHA) for the 10,000 private hospitals under Ayushman Bharat PMJAY, more than 600 hospitals empanelled under CGHS and other private hospitals empanelled under State Government’s Health Insurance Schemes,on Co-WIN2.0.The modalities of the new features integrated in the CoWIN2.0 digital platformwere explained to them.The private empanelled COVID Vaccination Centers (CVCs) were also trained on various aspects of the process of vaccination and management of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) through video conference with the support of the National Health Authority (NHA).
The participants were explained that all citizens that are aged, or will attain the age of, 60 years or more as on 1st January 2022 are eligible to register, in addition to all such citizens that are aged, or will attain the age of, 45 years to 59 years as on 1st January 2022, and have any of the specified 20 comorbidities (as annexed).
There will be only one live appointment for a beneficiary at any point of time for each dose. Appointments for any date for a COVID Vaccination Center will be closed at 3:00 pm on that day for which the slots were opened. For example, for 1st March the slots will be open from 9:00 am till 3:00 pm on 1st March, and the appointments can be booked anytime before that, subject to availability. However, on 1st March an appointment can also be booked for any future date for which vaccination slots are available. A slot for second dose will also be booked at the same COVID Vaccination Center on 29th day of the date of appointment of the 1st dose. If a beneficiary cancels a first dose appointment, then appointment of both doses will be cancelled.
The eligible persons will be able to register at the Co-WIN2.0 portal through their mobile number, through a step by step process. With one mobile number, a person can register as many as four beneficiaries. However, all those registered on one mobile number will have nothing in common except the mobile number. The Photo ID Card Number for each such beneficiary must be different. Either of the following Photo Identity Documents can be used by citizens for availing of online registration:-Aadhar Card/Letter
Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC)
Passport
Driving License
PAN Card
